Nutrition after knee replacement provides energy, protein, fluids, vitamins, and minerals needed for normal body function after surgery. It cannot guarantee a particular surgical result, eliminate inflammation, or substitute for medical management.

Why Nutrition After Knee Replacement Deserves Attention

Surgery places additional demands on the body while activity, sleep, and appetite may be disrupted. Adequate food and fluid intake support ordinary processes involving tissue repair, immune function, muscle maintenance, energy, and bowel function.

Malnutrition does not refer only to being underweight. Someone may have a larger body and still have inadequate protein, energy, vitamins, or minerals. Unplanned weight loss, reduced appetite, difficulty obtaining food, and restrictive diets may increase concern.

Nutrition supports the work your body is doing after surgery, but no single food, drink, or supplement determines the outcome.

Screening is particularly useful when eating has been difficult before surgery or remains limited afterward. A clinician can determine whether symptoms, medications, swallowing problems, dental issues, or a medical condition are affecting intake.

5 Priorities for Nutrition After Knee Replacement

1. Include Protein Across the Day

Protein supplies amino acids used throughout the body and helps support muscle maintenance. Surgery and reduced activity may make preserving muscle more difficult, especially in older adults or people who were eating poorly beforehand.

Protein can come from poultry, fish, eggs, dairy foods, soy, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, or other foods that fit your diet. The appropriate amount depends on body size, kidney function, medical conditions, appetite, and overall intake. A dietitian can establish a personal target.

2. Maintain Appropriate Hydration

Fluids support circulation, kidney function, digestion, and medication tolerance. Nausea, reduced appetite, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and difficulty reaching the bathroom may reduce intake after surgery.

There is no universal number of glasses that fits everyone. Heart failure, kidney disease, low sodium, dialysis, and other conditions may require fluid limits or specialized instructions. Follow the guidance provided for your medical history.

3. Choose a Varied Pattern of Foods

Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein foods, and sources of healthy fats provide different nutrients. Variety is more reliable than expecting one “anti-inflammatory” food to control surgical swelling or pain.

Fish, nuts, seeds, berries, leafy vegetables, peppers, beans, and whole grains may fit a balanced eating pattern. The presence of one food does not neutralize the effects of inadequate overall intake, uncontrolled blood sugar, medication problems, or a surgical complication.

4. Consider Vitamins and Minerals Without Guessing

Vitamin C contributes to collagen synthesis. Vitamin D and calcium support bone health. Iron is involved in red blood cell production, and zinc participates in many cellular processes. More is not automatically better.

Supplements may interact with anticoagulants, prescriptions, kidney function, or surgical instructions. Some nutrients can be harmful in excessive amounts. Testing and professional guidance are more appropriate than starting multiple supplements after surgery.

5. Protect Muscle During Reduced Appetite or Weight Loss

Pain, nausea, constipation, medications, and fatigue can make regular meals difficult. Smaller meals or snacks containing protein and energy may be easier to tolerate. Persistent poor intake deserves attention rather than waiting for substantial weight loss.

People using GLP-1 medications may experience reduced appetite or gastrointestinal symptoms. Medication decisions, perioperative instructions, and nutrition concerns belong with the prescribing clinician and surgical team. Do not stop or change a medication based on general information.

Nutrition for Diabetes and Other Medical Conditions

Blood glucose management is clinically important around joint replacement, but the appropriate plan depends on medications, monitoring, intake, and instructions from the medical team. Diabetes management should not be reduced to avoiding one category of food.

Kidney disease, heart disease, hypertension, anemia, digestive disorders, allergies, and anticoagulant use may require modifications that conflict with generic nutrition advice. This is where individualized guidance becomes especially important.
