Most fluctuations after knee replacement settle on their own with time and a lighter workload. Some changes deserve prompt medical evaluation instead of watching and waiting. Contact your surgeon or seek immediate care for:

  • Increasing redness spreading around the incision
  • New drainage from the wound
  • Fever along with a significant change in how the knee looks or feels
  • Severe calf pain with swelling that isn’t improving
  • A fall followed by an inability to bear weight, or a sudden change in the position or function of the knee
